Grey Kitchens

As we all know, grey is continuing to dominate as a neutral hue in home design these days. This colour has the ability to make a space feel warm & cozy or cool & sophisticated depending on what shade of grey you pick. In the past few years, it has also managed to become a prominent colour in kitchen cabinet design. Designers are using tips and tricks to make grey shine into a unconventional colour choice for kitchens that looks absolutely stunning! 

There are two main things you need to know when working with grey in kitchens:

1. Cool greys pair beautifully with warm finishes: wood, greenery, and colours such as red, yellow, or orange.
2. Warm greys look awesome when combined with other neutrals such as white, black, or navy.

Even if grey cabinets are too much for you, there are other ways to incorporate grey into your kitchen – seating, countertops, lighting, and backsplash are all great ways of getting some grey in there! Choose a barstool with grey patterned fabric or a beautiful light grey subway tile! Whether your style leans traditional or modern, these features will always fit in!

The Hallway Challenge

One of the easiest ways to bring life to a long, narrow hallway is to add colour and texture! It will open up your space and give it lots of character!

Light fixtures are probably my favorite part of design. They have an amazing ability to add finishing touches to any space and a long hallway is the perfect place to showcase lighting. Whatever your personal style is - funky, dramatic, glamorous, simple - a hallway will let your lighting shine to it's fullest.

Add an accent wall, try wallpaper with a fun pattern, paint your hallway two colours (which can look beautiful if you have wainscoting - one colour on top and a different on bottom). In terms of colour - the possibilities are endless!

The importance of hallways cannot be overstated. Besides providing a way to get from point A to point B, they can also supply opportunities to showcase artwork, emphasize a focal point, or make a statement. In terms of design, they can often be forgotten about or they are considered a huge decor challenge.

So I put together a few ideas to help you with your hallway! Check them out!

Making a picture gallery is probably the most popular option for hallway décor, but it can also be the most overwhelming. What pictures do you choose? How many do you need? Do you keep the picture frames all the same or change it up? How do you begin to hang them? Firstly, figure out what you want to showcase - artwork, family photos, etc. I personally love a wall of pictures frames that are all different - it adds tons of character to the space. With regards to where to start hanging, find the middle of the wall and just go for it. Hang the pictures straight, at random - it's completely up to you!

If you’re hallway isn’t too skinny, it is an awesome place to incorporate a bookcase. Hallway bookcases can be a great storage solution and an amazing design element.

The World's Ugliest Colour

Check out Pantone 448C. Do you like it? Do you hate it?? 

Over the past few months there has been great debate over Pantone 448C or Opaque Couché (as is its official name). This all came about when a research company was tasked to find a colour to put on the Australian government’s plain cigarette packaging to deter people from buying cigarettes. Since this idea has become a big hit, the UK, Ireland, and France are looking at partaking as well.

So is the colour really that bad? Sure, when it’s on a pack of cigarettes it might look vaguely like sludge. But when found in nature, fashion, or interior design, I find it to be pretty darn stunning.

I don’t feel any colour deserves to be labeled “the ugliest” - simply because I believe that every colour has epic amounts of potential. For example, when I look at Pantone 448C, I see a deep, rich, earth tone that would be an awesome colour for a military style jacket, a cute throw pillow, or a dramatic wallpaper.
